Training Platforms – Topside

Gilboa Quarry provides two distinct personalities: the shallow side at 5 – 65 ft provides great recreational enjoyment, while the deep side of the quarry with depths of 130 plus ft is suitable for technical training. There are a multitude of items of interest for all divers. Whether it is our large training platforms, 15 – 130 plus ft depths, or our many sunken treasures, such as the Grumman airplane and Sikorsky helicopter, there is certain to be something of interest for everyone.

Decks & Staging Areas

Gilboa Quarry has large spacious decks and staging tables spanning 150′ feet to help diver’s gear up and make their important equipment adjustments. Connected directly to these decks are three large floating platforms accessible by stairways and gangplanks. A fourth platform is equipped with a handicap accessible ramp. Each floating platform has two in water stairways making entry and exit from the water easy no matter how much gear you wear.


Gilboa Quarry is a dive instructor’s paradise. On the shallow side of the quarry suspended just 20 ft from the surface and 10 ft from the bottom are 90 ft of instructor’s platforms. These platforms consist of 6 individual 10′ x 20′ suspended staging areas ideal for taking students safely through there open water checkout. Since several classes can be given at one time, there is no waiting. This, along with the great visibility, offer the student and instructor the perfect environment to perform everything from mask clearing to buddy breathing.

Deep Side

Diving on the deep side requires a “DEEP DIVE PLAN”, proper training, and equipment!

The north side of the quarry also known as the deep side offers depths of up to 139 ft is suitable for technical training. It is the deepest body of water in the state of Ohio. This part of the quarry is what separates this quarry from all others. The deep side of the quarry is for specially trained and skilled divers. There are requirements that need to be met before diving on deep side of the quarry. A dive plan is required to be submitted and approved by the owner before diving. If you are new to the quarry a interview will be needed to better evaluate your qualifications and the diver must be advanced open water certified and have at least 30 open cold water dives logged to their credit.

The deep side is also equipped with a large dock, gear tables, and a suspended platform 70 ft down. This platform offers the perfect environment for deep water instructors and their students and a great place to make last minute equipment adjustments before exploring the deeper waters. Proper equipment is necessary to safely dive on the deep side.
